How good are you at negotiating? As an independent consultant, I’m leaning on that skill more and more as I work with clients.

Whether there’s a challenge over price, timeline, or scope of the project, negotiating requires you to be your own best advocate, yet you have to see the situation through the other person’s eyes. Otherwise, you won’t be prepared to counter or compromise effectively and come away with an agreement that works well for both of you.

Getting the best possible result for yourself and maintaining a solid client relationship is ideal. Being prepared with your next best and best worst-case scenarios is necessary. It’s a balancing act but at the end of the day, you have to represent yourself and you have to do it well.
